Be Prepared For Any Job Interview Style

It is wise to be prepared for any job interview style. After all the early bird or the bird that is prepared gets the worm.
While employers use several styles of interviews, there are two basic approaches to interviewing - that is structured and unstructured interviewing tactics. Sometimes these approaches are combined within one category. At other times, the interview falls into one of the two categories. It all depends as they say. It may be your lucky day if you are prepared for scenario one and it falls in your lap. However it can just as easily go the other route. Plan ahead and prepare for the eventuality of the second type of interview format. It is destined to come your way at some point in your employment interviewing (or interrogation) career path.
Once you have the job interview scheduled, you will greatly improve your chances of success if you find out what style of interview will be used. Usually the human resources department or receptionist will explain the general interview style, format and process to you. Remember in most cases people are quite conservative and do not stray from the path they are taught by their predecessor. This mentor most likely was taught by his boss. And on it goes. Not a lot of originality in the interview process. Use this knowledge and understanding or the system to your benefit in the eventual hiring process.
What are the two types of interviews formats? First is the structured interview. Next is the behavioral interview.
The structured interview is often used by professional interviewers who work in human resources departments or are part of a corporate team, panel or other trained group. The interviewer typically uses a planned pattern or questioning, sometimes recording the applicant's responses and making notes on a checklist or an interview rating form.
It can be well stated that many interviewers were all taught from the same book and lack originality. Use this knowledge to your benefit to anticipate and plan ahead for answers to those standard questions - What are your strong points? What are your weak points? Where do you see yourself in 2, 5 or 10 years? etc. etc. etc.
The approach of the structured interview is formal and focuses on obtaining factual information. Or at least apparently. Because the structured interview is by it's vary nature structured the approach does not give the interviewer adequate information. Again you can use this to your advantage both in terms of planning ahead for the interview with all of its apparent lack of originality and easily answered questions to lead you onwards o later job employment meeting along the employment interview path.
Second in line of interview formats is the ""Behavioral Interview ""style. In the behavioral interview style, the interviewer asks questions aimed at getting the applicant to provide specific examples of how he or she has successfully used the skills required for the target job. It is all not unlike the question ""Have you stopped beating your wife?"" It is all about seeing how you react to questions and situations. Again many of the questions and situations asked can be anticipated and planned for ahead of time.
The interviewee is evaluated based on their responses and behavior. How you react to these questions and situations is supposed to be indicative of how you will respond to these same situations under employment. However this is all very similar to the behavior of actions of a young woman who is desperate for marriage or a young man out on a prowl. It is best to sit back and ponder for a moment what the ""correct answer ""is to the question. Remember no one will ever criticize you in a job interview for taking the time to be thorough and ask further questions in order to clarify the situation before jumping to action. Such a pattern shows real thought processes, thoroughness and attention to detail. All apparently valued traits in most organizations.
In the end preparation and planning for job interview and job interviews is everything. Remember as well that you are interviewing the organization as to whether it is a good place to work as well as a good career stepping stone for you. The interviewer is your only reflection and source of information for that firm or organization on hand.

6 Important Questions You Must Ask Management

Finding representation for your career can be a very hard, but very important task if you want to further your career path. Many people rush into contracts, signing on the dotted line before they think clearly about the ramifications.
Once a contract is made and signed, getting out of it, if there are problems can be very costly and time consuming. With that said, there are at least 6 important questions you must ask yourself when you are seeking representation.
1. Does this manager represent your genre of music? If you are Country, are they Rock and Roll only or do they represent country music as well. 2. How honest do they feel? It is important that everyone on your team is straightforward and honest. Instinct is your best gauge. You should also ask around the industry to find out how others have reacted to this person. 3. Is this manager reputable? Make sure you get recommendations. 4. Are they just beginning their career or are they already well connected. (If someone is just at the beginning of their career, they may not have the connections you need. However, they may also work harder for you and have fewer clients. You will need to consider the pros and cons.) 5. What are their work ethics? You will need to seek out others who have worked with them to find out this information. 6. what is their managerial style? Do they sit back and watch what other people do, or do they take charge of any situations that occur? To obtain this information, you will need to find other musicians who have worked with them.
Avoid anyone who asks for a monthly retainer fee or salary or states that for $5,000 - $10,000 they can redo your demo CD. Legitimate managers do not ask for a monthly retainer fee or salary and inflated costs to redo your demo is a rip off. In addition, asking for a salary is another way of stating they do not believe enough in your talents to take a risk.
Why would you want to work with anyone who does not believe in you? The sad truth is that many musicians, out of desperation for their career, make poor career choices. Desperation does not make good business arrangements.
An important piece of advice: Do not use an attorney recommended by your prospective manager. You want an attorney who is completely on your side.

A Dozen Tips for Staying Motivated in Your Job Search

1. Recognize your motivational enemies in a job search. They are: constant rejection, constant failure, and lack of control. Don't let them make you inactive and lacking in confidence.
2. Look forward, not backward : Every minute you spend thinking about your past job is a minute robbed from your future. And anyway, your previous employer is no longer paying you for thinking about them; you're giving them free consulting time.
3. Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. It is human nature to spend more time thinking about your weaknesses than your strengths, but getting a job and being successful in a career depends more on your strengths than your weaknesses.
4. Turn your goal into a vision. The goal of ""getting a job"" isn't enough. See in your minds eye the job you want, in detail.
5. Over prepare. Practice interviewing, get input on your résumé, get appropriate job search and career counseling and help. Remember, ""good enough"" isn't good enough.
6. Network, network, network. About 70% of jobs are obtained through some form of personal contact (such as personal networking and utilizing recruiters). Less than 10% of jobs are obtained through the Internet; so why spend 95% of your time on the Internet?
7. Make your job search strategy specific. Make a specific schedule listing your resources, actions, problems, solutions, expected results, and deadlines.
8. Attack your own excuses. We all have excuses for why we're not making the calls we need to make, or writing the letters we need to write. For example, don't pamper yourself into thinking that you can make a job search call only when you're ""in the mood.""
9. Never give up. Getting a job is a numbers game; the more potential employers you get in front of, the better your chances not only of getting a job, but getting the kind of job you want.
10. Maintain your professionalism. Being a professional is not a function of how you are treated by others or whether they recognize your skills. Being a professional happens when you behave like a professional. And the most important time to behave like a professional is when you are NOT being treated like one.
11. Write your résumé and cover letter for a skimmer, not a reader. Everyone knows that, but then everyone tries to make everything stand out in a resume. Can't be done! You have to be ruthless in deciding what is most important, and put that first. It will help your motivation.
12. Focus on your bottom-line value to the company. Sure, everyone talks about their experience and their skills, but companies hire because they need someone to help them solve their problems and achieve their goals. That's what to focus on.
